Sophie Westfahl, alumna of the Information Management and Corporate Communication (IMUK) degree programme at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU), developed a novel programming framework for an augmented reality manual for dishwashers with Unity and Vuforia.
"Prototypical implementation of an Augmented Reality manual for dishwashers with Unity and Vuforia in consideration to handling the complexity of variants".
Augmented Reality (AR) application that can be used to generate user manuals for household appliances. The HNU alumna has now been awarded the Swabian Economy 2023 University Prize by the Swabian Chamber of Industry and Commerce: The jury decided by a large majority in favour of the outstanding thesis, which exemplifies the synergies between regional companies and the university.
University Award of the Swabian Economy as an Incentive for Practice-Oriented Studying
The laudation was held by Eva Treu and Roland Kober, members of the board of the Neu-Ulm regional assembly of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Afterwards, together with Hermann Hutter, Chairman of the IHK Regional Assembly Günzburg, Dr Marc Lucassen, Chief Executive Officer of the IHK Swabia and the Regional Managing Director Oliver Stipar, they presented the university prize endowed with 3,000 euros to Sophie Westfahl, who attended the event together with supervisor Prof. Dr Dany Meyer (HNU) and practice partner Dr Oliver Friese (BSH Hausgeräte GmbH).
"Receiving the University Prize of the Swabian Economy is a great honour and recognition for my work," summed up the award winner, who presented her results to the audience once again. "With augmented reality, I had chosen an area that did not play a central role in my degree programme, but which was extremely relevant. My award is therefore also a great signal that it is worthwhile to think outside the box and get involved in new subject areas." Sophie Westfahl's work demonstrates the beneficial application and combination of the competences in the field of design, information technology and programming as well as scientific research methods in the field of design science research taught in the IMUK degree programme.
With the University Prize of Swabian Business, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce provides an incentive for practice-oriented studies - and very successfully, as Prof. Dr. Dany Meyer emphasised: "We at HNU are very proud that several theses have already been awarded this prestigious prize. This not only reflects the HNU's self-image of solution-oriented and practice-oriented education, but also shows the great willingness of regional companies to closely interlink business and science."
HNU women's promotion: Role models show the way to success
The successful path of the HNU alumna, who has already received a best paper award for her work in the past, is also an example of successful women's advancement at the university: "I see that with our female professors and mentors as role models, we can inspire and encourage the young women," stated HNU Women's Representative Prof. Dr. Claudia Kocian-Dirr.
