Innovation projects and applied research

In addition to the classic tasks of a data center, the latest IT technologies are established at HNU to continuously improve research, teaching and administrative tasks.

CRM

The department of university development uses sugar-crm to maintain and manage several hundred contacts that it maintains for the university. These include, for example, commercial enterprises, associations and providers of third-party funding. The CRM system enables a constantly updated database to be maintained as well as prompt and efficient communication with the various interest groups. This software, which is actually designed for commercial enterprises, was adapted by the computer centre to the needs of the department.

E-Learning

E-Learning stands for all forms of learning supported by electronic media, e.g. learning systems, animations, simulations or video conferences. It supports individual learning, but also offers advantages in cooperative forms of learning.
Existing forms of teaching are not replaced by e-learning, but are complemented in a meaningful way. The Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences uses the learning management system Moodle.
This is used to coordinate the learning activities. Moodle has many possibilities to enrich teaching and opens up new forms of communication and cooperation between teachers and students.
E-Learning Services helps with questions about e-learning and is responsible for the administration and management of the learning platform. This includes course administration, the adaptation and expansion of the platform functionality and user support.

Portal - Content Management System (CMS)

A portal is a central access point through an application system that is characterized by the integration of applications, processes and services. The so-called portal on the Internet is a special form of homepage, which forms the start page at HNU.
A content management system is a web-based administration system for websites. Using such a CMS, several authors can edit the content of a page. One author can use it to edit and create the internet pages of a faculty or department without programming or HTML knowledge and without much effort.
HNU has been using such a content management system since October 2011. Each faculty and department will have a so-called "portal" for its own internet presence, i.e. a separate area for creating dynamic websites.
Each portal automatically receives the corporate design - a uniform appearance of the university - so that the authors only have to concentrate on the editorial work of their websites.

Virtualization

Server virtualization has been an established concept in IT operations for some time now, and desktop and application virtualization solutions are currently experiencing strong growth. A further conceptual development of these concepts are approaches such as cloud computing as well as on-demand and software as a service (SaaS) solutions. Today, the university already operates a large part of its server infrastructure in virtualized form. In order to further develop this strategy, possibilities and boundary conditions for the use of the above-mentioned concepts such as application virtualisation, cloud computing etc. in the teaching and administration of the university are being investigated at the computer centre and corresponding concepts and solutions are being developed and implemented. In particular, the practical suitability and integration of corresponding solutions in the data center operation on the one hand and the linkage with electronic learning environments (e-learning, blended learning) on the other hand are investigated and implemented.
