Movement-promoting furniture for students in the HNU library

04.07.2023, Press Release :

Study while riding a bike, researching literature and being active on the stepper: Student health management at Neu-Ulm University (HNU) has added a new service. Students can now benefit from several exercise-promoting devices in the library. The furniture, financed by the Förderverein der Hochschule Neu-Ulm e.V., was inaugurated on June 27, 2023.

Exercise increases concentration, motivation and also social interaction. However, during intensive learning phases, exercise is often neglected among students. The HNU Student Health Management team, together with the University Library team, has responded to this fact: With the help of the Friends of the Library, a deskbike, two deskcycles, two steppers and five ergonomic stools were purchased for the library, which have now been officially inaugurated. The inauguration was attended by HNU Vice President Prof. Dr. Julia Kormann, Chancellor Markus Dingel, Head of the Library Barbara Mäule-Müller, Nick Podstawski from the Student Council and the Chairman of the Friends, Günter Augustin.

Vice President Prof. Dr. Julia Kormann, who initiated Student Health Management at HNU, explains, "As a business school, we not only have the task of imparting technical and methodological knowledge to our students, we also want to equip them with the ability to take care of themselves."

The Förderverein der Hochschule Neu-Ulm e.V., which has around 100 members from the worlds of business and politics as well as well over 300 alumni, was particularly keen to support HNU students with an exercise-rich learning environment. The equipment is already available to students for free use in the library.

The student council is also excited about the new equipment. "The devices incidentally provide variety and exercise. During the exam period, it's a great way to get other regions of the brain going," says Nick Podstawski.

Since the winter semester 2019/20, HNU has been specifically committed to the health of its students. The Student Health Management team, in which the student council is centrally involved, uses the results of the university-wide "University Health Report" to develop new measures and offers every semester to support the physical and mental health of students. In the Corporate Health Award benchmark, HNU scored very well with an implementation level of 88 percent and can thus count itself among the excellence class nationwide.
