Opening of the artwork "Delta" on the HNU campus

14.07.2021, Press Release :

Munich artist Martin Wöhrl unveiled his artwork "Delta" on the campus of Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU). In its basic form, the sculpture is reminiscent of a tank barrier and thus of the prehistory of the Wiley site, but it also symbolises the three pillars of the university: teaching, research and transfer.

The model for the free-standing ceramic sculpture is a "Spanish Rider", a tank barrier that used to be found on the Wiley site. "The military object is alienated poetically," says artist Martin Wöhrl, who won the "Kunst am Bau" competition announced in the course of construction phase II (white building). Together with Neu-Ulm's 3rd Mayor Gerlinde Koch, HNU Chancellor Marcus Dingel, Martina Lutterer from the Krumbach Building Authority and HNU Vice President Prof. Dr. Julia Kormann, Martin Wöhrl inaugurated the artwork on 14 July 2021.

Symbol for positive historical development

In dialogue with the existing artwork "Gateway to the World" and the black and white building of the HNU, the striking red, column-like form is intended to emphasise the magistral between the university facilities with the axis of the housing estate and parks. In designing the building, Wöhrl took a look at the past of the city of Neu-Ulm, which originated as a fortress and garrison town and was a US army base for four decades, especially in the area around today's university. The former military area has since been transformed into a residential area, a park and sports landscape and the university campus. Wöhrl's artwork "is meant to be a kind of symbol for this positive historical development".
