About the programme

Contents of the programme

The degree programme is divided into five content areas.
In the area of digital transformation, the effects of digitalisation on companies are dealt with above all: How can processes be digitalised? How can companies become agile? How can IT security be guaranteed? You will also look at how new technologies and media can be used to shape our economy and our society.

In the area of management, you will learn all the relevant basics to understand companies and their business management decisions: How do companies work? What do I have to consider in business and IT law? What skills do I need for international projects? What is the best way to negotiate? You will also be able to combine leadership and ethics in times of digitalisation.

In the area of IT, you will learn how to use, optimise and evaluate IT solutions or even develop these solutions yourself. In project teams and in practice-oriented case studies, you will develop databases and apps together with your fellow students. You will learn agile project management, object-oriented programming and software engineering methods.

In the area of soft skills and languages, you will learn interdisciplinary competences: How do I optimise my self-management? What is important in team management? How do I present myself convincingly? You will also learn practical business English: How do I speak, negotiate or present in business meetings?

In the area of interdisciplinary methods, you will learn how to write scientific papers. The integrated practical semester is also included here.
From the 5th semester onwards, you can choose two individual specialisations. You can choose from Industry 4.0, Big Data or Digital Business Transformation, for example. You can also take individual compulsory electives, e.g. additional languages. In addition, you have access to the entire range of courses offered by the Virtual University of Bavaria.

Selection of focal points

In the DEM degree programme, all students have the opportunity to choose two specialisations according to their own preferences and interests. There are a total of eight concentrations to choose from, each of which includes three lecture modules.

Digital Business Transformation
This focus is suitable for all "doers" who want to actively shape future changes and take on a leading role in the upcoming "change" tasks in companies and other organisations, or who want to implement their own ideas until they are ready for the market.

Game Development and Gamification
The games industry occupies a special position in the German entrepreneurial landscape, which essentially distinguishes it from other branches of industry. In this focus area, these special features and unique selling points are to be identified and made tangible in an exemplary manner.

Big Data
Social media postings or audio and video recordings generate large unstructured amounts of data: "Big Data". In this focus, the focus is on the storage, analysis and evaluation of the data, the required platforms and tools for productive models as well as a basic understanding of algorithms and their runtimes.
Game Innovation, Marketing and Analytics
Game developers face numerous challenges: How do I strategically position and establish a game company in the local and global market and how can I best promote and distribute game products with their own brand identity? These challenges are addressed in this focus.

Industry 4.0
This focus deals with aspects of Industry 4.0 such as logistics processes, production and product life cycle management. These aspects are not only discussed, but also deepened through practical exercises and project tasks.

Predictive Models (not together with Artificial Intelligence and Mobility).
This focus is on the formation of AI models (Artificial Intelligence), in particular learning from speech processing data and deep artificial neural networks.

Processes in the Automotive Industry
The automotive industry has been one of the most innovative industries in the world for years. But what exactly is behind it? In this focus area, the processes in the automotive industry are addressed with a focus on product creation, sales and distribution as well as after-sales service.

Artificial Intelligence and Mobility (not together with Predictive Models)
How do driver assistance systems actually work? In this focus, the focus is on the formation of AI models. Particularly important is learning from data, the use of deep artificial neural networks and the development of intelligent driving assistance systems.

Career perspectives

Job examples for the DEM degree programme are:

  • IT project manager for digital transformation projects
  • Application developer for business information systems
  • Trainer for software
  • Sales representative for hardware/software and IT services
  •  IT Consultant
  • Business Development Manager
  • Digital Transformation Manager
  • Business Process Manager

In addition, you also have the opportunity to study even further, the course qualifies you for an academic career within the framework of a Master's programme.

Internships and stays abroad

Practical teaching and practical semester
In addition to basic principles and methodological knowledge, the courses deal with concrete problems from professional practice and develop solutions. Already in the first semesters, students learn business management concepts and software solutions on the basis of projects. Practical exercises and case studies are used extensively in the programme to optimally prepare students for their future professional life. In addition, qualified lecturers and guest lecturers from professional practice impart valuable knowledge to the students. The fourth semester is also a compulsory practical semester. Here, students work in a company for the entire semester and can put into practice what they have learned so far. This also offers the opportunity to make initial contacts for starting a career.
In addition, it is possible to study Digital Enterprise Management with in-depth practice. This allows students to supplement their regular Bachelor's degree programme with regular practical phases in a company. Further information can be found here. If you have any questions about the study programme with in-depth practical experience, please contact Prof. Dr. Oliver Grieble.

Stays abroad and international orientation of the degree programme
From the third semester onwards, students can go abroad, e.g. for a semester abroad. It is also possible to do an internship or a Bachelor's thesis abroad. Students are supported in this by the International Office at HNU. Would you like to be ideally prepared for an international career during your studies? In the compulsory modules, DEM students acquire skills in Business English and negotiation in an international context. On the other hand, in addition to English, they can choose from numerous languages (Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, French, Italian) as optional subjects.

Programme language

The teaching language in this degree programme is German and English.

Contributions and fees

There are no tuition fees. A semester fee (administrative fees and solidarity fee) is charged per semester. Information on this can be found on the page "HNU - Fees and Re-registration (opens in a new window)".

Voices about the degree programme

The industrial engineering/logistics degree programme is very up-to-date. In addition to logistics, topics such as production organisation, lean management and IT are also covered. Basic subjects from business and technology and learning a new language round off your education. I am currently writing my Bachelor's thesis and after 7 semesters I can now say that I would choose logistics again at any time.
