Why Systems Engineering?

Systems Engineering is a modern engineering degree program that combines the fields of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and applied computer science in an interdisciplinary way. Networking, digitalization, individualization and internationalization are important keywords associated with Industry 4.0. These skills and many more are trained on the Systems Engineering course and taught in a practical way through projects in the lectures.

Really cool - you can switch between the study options (full-time, part-time or with in-depth practical experience). Complete your basic studies full-time and then switch to part-time studies, possibly at one of our more than 100 partner companies. You earn money, have a job and a degree all in one.

Focus on your future - become an engineer in an increasingly networked world.
The demand for graduates of the Systems Engineering degree programme is currently very high and will remain so in the foreseeable future in a wide variety of sectors of the economy.

In nationally and internationally developing and manufacturing industries such as automation technology, robotics, vehicle construction, aerospace and medical technology, engineers with a broad and interdisciplinary education are increasingly in demand. Demand is particularly strong in the electronics, information and systems technology sectors. But interdisciplinary engineering is also playing an increasingly important role in the fields of management consultancy and project management. These developments provide you with excellent opportunities on the regional and global job market.
Many Systems Engineering graduates work in the following areas after graduation or venture into self-employment:

  • IT (system administration, information security manager, industrial IT, cybersecurity)
  • Production planning/design
  • Electronics development
  • Self-employment

Structure of the degree programme

Fundamentals and orientation phase

In the first semesters, students are taught the fundamentals of both engineering and applied computer science. Teaching is very practice-orientated through interdisciplinary projects. Interdisciplinary key competences are also taught.

Specialisation phase

In the subsequent specialisation phase, students expand their knowledge of networked technical systems in elective specialisations from the fields of computer science, electrical engineering or business administration. Projects are also realised here in cooperation with companies. Each student can choose four out of six elective specialisations. The following areas are available:

  •  Digital Supply Chain Management
  •  Automation systems
  •  Applied industrial data systems
  •  Project Management
  •  Measurement and control systems
  •   Fundamentals of industrial data systems
Practical and final phase

In the practical and final phase, students write their Bachelor's thesis and are taught business administration for engineers as well as personal, social and methodological skills. In addition, the practical semester is completed in this semester if you have not completed the dual study programme.

Special features

Cooperative study programme with an extensive e-learning offering

The Systems Engineering degree programme is a cooperative degree programme of the three universities of Augsburg, Kempten and Neu-Ulm in the "Digital and Regional" model, which combines the advantages of e-learning and local studies. An extensive e-learning programme enables structured and supervised preparation and follow-up of the attendance phases, in-depth study of content or support in building up the basics. This makes it easier to integrate the degree programme into your everyday life. Switching between the study formats (full-time, part-time, in-depth practice) is possible without any problems - this is unique and does not exist anywhere else.

What options are there to customise the degree programme to your individual requirements?

1.  Full-time degree programme

  • Duration of study: 7 semesters
  • The programme is regularly completed full-time

2. Part-time degree programme
The Bachelor's degree programme in Systems Engineering can be studied alongside a career or on a dual basis, i.e. in combination or as a degree programme with in-depth practical experience. In contrast to other dual study programmes, students on the Digital and Regional study model usually spend at least three days a week at the company. This particularly close interlinking of theory and practice means that you do not acquire inert knowledge, but can implement the course content directly in the company context.

If you complete the part-time version of the programme, we recommend part-time employment with a suitable company. The following cooperation partners are involved:

Please contact the company(s) of your choice as early as possible to secure a place there. We will be happy to help you with the placement and search. The lists are not exhaustive. Your current or desired employer is not yet a cooperation partner of the Systems Engineering degree programme? Then get in touch with us.

3. Intensive degree programme
The intensive study programme is the turbo variant and can be completed with a scholarship.

Cooperations

In order to meet the practical requirements of the part-time model of the "Systems Engineering (BEng)" degree programme for the entire duration of your studies, you should take up part-time employment or conclude a training or education contract with a regional partner company. Only then should you apply to Augsburg University of Applied Sciences (see also "Application and admission").
