Special features
Options for specialisations and profiles
Specialisation programme
Students have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in elective areas either at HNU, at the Bavarian Virtual University of Applied Sciences or abroad.
The IMUK programme also offers three specialisations: Consulting and Project Management, Cross-Media Journalism and Media and Communications. Here, students choose five subjects for one specialisation (totalling 10 ECTS credits) from a list of electives.
Students who earn 10 ECTS credits abroad for studying and exams may also choose to have an international focus included on their transcripts.
Consultung and Project Management
The specialisation “Consulting and Project Management” equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful project implementation, especially in the area of consulting. Graduates with this specialisation are trained to work in various areas of management consulting (process, organisational, IT and strategy consulting) as well as in in-house consulting. The programme contents extend on and supplement the material from the Project Management course in the foundational IMUK curriculum.
In these courses, a special emphasis is placed on activities in service companies. These extend beyond management consulting firms, opening up a wide scope of activity for graduates. Possibilities for focusing within the area of specialisation are available in the subjects of social media, IT management, business process management and development of user-centred services.
Cross-Media
Students who choose the “Cross-Media” specialisation learn to prepare material for diverse media channels. They write texts to appear online or in print, create audio and video clips and compile audio slideshows. They use social media (Facebook, Twitter, …) in their research and self-marketing. The focus of the content is on the areas of economics, finance and consumers. Students acquire economic knowledge during their foundational studies.
Within this specialisation, students are trained with a high degree of practice relevance. Collaborations exist with various media companies. In their classes, students write articles and create audio slideshows and vodcasts for online use, which are then published in newspapers or on publishing house websites. Experienced journalists visit classes as guest speakers. The cooperation with media companies enables students to establish contact with potential employers at an early stage.
Potential employers for graduates of the Information Management and Corporate Communications (IMUK) programme with a specialisation in “Cross-Media” include regional and national publishers and broadcasters, PR agencies and PR/marketing departments at large and medium-sized companies as well as the growing segment of corporate publishing. Cross-media training enables students to prepare complex economic, financial and consumer topics for various media channels in a way that is attractive, contemporary and easily understood.
Media and Communications
The specialisation “Media and Communications” comprises, in particular, the conception and production of media content, as well as the associated project coordination.
Possible areas of employment for IMUK graduates include: marketing, corporate communications, strategic planning, conceptual design, user experience design, company contact and media production. Graduates provide the interface between the customer and the creation.
Future areas of responsibility include: research on markets, customers and competitors, conceptual design and collaboration with creation departments and other departments such as customer service and reporting. With larger projects, graduates can act as project managers to ensure that processes run smoothly and information flows easily between all of the parties involved.
In PR agencies, the areas of responsibility also include: maintaining contact with journalists and customers, developing cross-media PR campaigns, organising journalist trips and editorial visits, coordinating, customer reporting, writing press releases and coordinating social media, user contributions, interviews and professional articles.
Career perspectives
Graduates of this programme often find employment where the areas of communication, design and production meet. Typical professional fields in medium-sized companies include marketing, marketing communications and public relations.
Graduates often find jobs within companies in the strategic areas of
- product marketing,
- marketing communications,
- sales management and
- public relations.
They are just as much in demand in communications departments as in advertising, PR and event management agencies.
Self-employment and freelance work is encouraged in the course of this programme. New occupational profiles can also emerge, requiring skills in the areas of IT, business studies, design and communications. These new occupational profiles can include areas such as: UX/interface design, big data / AI marketing, content marketing, multimedia design and multimedia or community management.
Internships and stays abroad
Teaching with practical relevance
In addition to covering the basics and methodology, these courses address concrete problems in professional practice and develop solutions. During the main part of the degree programme, in particular, many projects are carried out with regional and international companies and organisations. IMUK students also prepare the magazine “breitseite” once a year, and provide support with marketing the programme on social media.
Here are a few examples:

Magazine breitseite
Since 2009, the magazine “breitseite” has been created every winter semester as part of the “Communication Project” class. This magazine is aimed at all people interested in the Information Management and Corporate Communications programme – schoolchildren, students, alumni, families, friends and potential employers.
In a period of less than 15 weeks, students in their fifth semester design and produce a complete magazine in cooperation with the international exchange students. The students are divided up into the following departments: advertising acquisition, text, layout and production. Further teams of students make videos, write stories with a storytelling tool and support the project in social media as well as on the website.

Degree programme with intensive in-company training
Students in the “Information Management and Corporate Communications” programme at the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences have the option of pursuing a degree with intensive in-company training.
- Students who choose this format for studying benefit from practical training in the form of practical semesters as well as phases for learning specialist and management skills. Students begin with practical phases in a company during the lecture-free periods in the first three semesters and complete the internship semester in the same company.
- Students who would like to participate in the in-company training programme can apply either directly through the companies or via the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences Career Service.
- The HNU job website provides a listing of the places offered by companies. While HNU may recommend suitable students to the companies during the application process, the final decision is taken by the company itself.
Double Degree
Would you like to study abroad without losing any time? And actually earn a second degree while you’re at it?
Then IMUK is just the programme for you! In this programme, you will have the opportunity to attend the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (OAMK) in Finland during your second year of studies. There you will be able to study business information technology in English for a year fulltime. In return, you will receive a second bachelor’s degree from OAMK, serving as proof to future employers of your international experience and your exceptional commitment. And the best part is that the credits you earn in Oulu will be fully recognised in the IMUK programme, so you won’t even need to prolong your studies!
