A wide range of activities take place at the HNU to make the campus international and enable students and staff to gain international experience even without travelling abroad. Under the motto "Internationalisation@Home", numerous professional, linguistic, social, cultural and culinary events and activities took place in the academic years 2018/19 and 2019/20.

In­ter­na­tional teach­ing

In addition to an international perspective on subject content, a wide range of international courses also trains foreign language skills and the ability to work in international teams.

HNU stu­dents vo­lun­teer as bud­dies for in­ter­na­tional ex­change stu­dents

HNU students have the chance to support international exchange students as a buddy at the beginning of the semester and help them find their way around at the HNU and in Neu-Ulm. They can apply at the International Office, and in addition to an expense allowance, they receive a certificate of intercultural commitment, and more importantly, they gain international contacts. In the reporting period, 31 students supported the incoming exchange students as buddies.

In­ter­na­tional Fair & Co

Every semester, the International Office organises events for students to establish international contacts and gather information about opportunities and options to go abroad: International Week, International Fair, language tandem, application workshop "Successful CVs" and information sessions. In the winter semester 2019/20, a total of 420 students took part in these events.

Centre for in­ter­dis­cip­lin­ary, in­ter­na­tional and com­mit­ted learn­ing (ZiieL)

The ZiieL (aim) of the HNU is to promote inter- and transdisciplinary learning as well as service learning in curricular and extra-curricular offers - in the region and internationally. One of the offers is the elective module "Cultural Programme".

Sup­port for in­ter­na­tional stu­dents at the HNU

Funding from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides annual funding to support international students in their studies at the HNU. During the reporting period, a total of 45 scholarships were awarded, as well as twice the prestigious DAAD prize of 1,000 euros each for students with outstanding academic achievements and remarkable social commitment.

Africa Days

In January 2019, the Africa Day for Enterprises took place for the first time at the Castle Vöhlin Seminar Centre. It was aimed at companies from the region which are interested in doing business in African countries.  Africa as a growth market for small and medium-sized enterprises was discussed and experiences exchanged with the 50 participants. In January 2020, the Africa Day for Enterprises took place for the second time. Thematically, the day revolved around pragmatic solutions for African growth markets and was organised by the Africa Institute of the HNU together with Bayern Innovativ.

IEMT Con­fer­ence

In November 2019, the second International Conference on Economics, Management and Technology (IEMT) took place at the HNU under the motto "Social Innovation and Transformative Business Management". It was organised by the HNU in cooperation with Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand, the National University of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and the University of the Western Cape in South Africa and attracted an international audience of experts from numerous countries. A total of 33 international guests from 13 countries were present. Scientists from the HNU thus had the opportunity for a lively international exchange on site.

In­ter­na­tional Events at Castle Vöh­lin Sem­inar Centre

Every year, the Castle Vöhlin Seminar Centre hosts numerous international events organised by the Bavarian-Swabian universities of Augsburg, Kempten and Neu-Ulm: HNU's Africa Day, the Danube Schools series of the European Danube Academy (with one event each in Ulm/Neu-Ulm, one in Novi Sad, Serbia and one in Budapest, Hungary, in 2018 on the topic of "Migration & Innovation in the Danube Region" and in 2019 on the topic of "Cultural Diversity and Identity in the Danube Region"), the Kick-Off Boot Camp of the international Master's programme International Business & Finance at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, as well as various international conferences and research symposia on the topics of (electric) mobility and autonomous driving at Kempten University of Applied Sciences.

In­ter­na­tion­al­isa­tion of the ad­min­is­tra­tion

The funding line "Internationalisation of the Administration" of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK) aims, among other things, to further develop the foreign language skills of administrative staff. In the reporting period, eight English courses (levels A1/A2 to B2/C1) and one basic Spanish course were held; in addition, a training course on intercultural communication was offered. A total of 80 participants attended these further training opportunities.
