Children get a taste of university life at HNU

31.10.2024, University News :

Hands-on science, fun and games and a look at the wider world: at the children's university on 29 October at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU), more than 40 children got to know HNU and the campus in a playful way. Together with their parents, they attended four programmes in groups.

After the welcome by HNU Vice President Prof Dr Julia Kormann, who introduced the children and parents in the lecture theatre to HNU and its profile, the guests split into four groups. They took it in turns to attend the forty-minute programmes.

Robotik-Workshop

One of the offers was a robotics workshop with professors Dr Dany Meyer and Dr Erica Weilemann in the HNU automotive laboratory. After a brief theoretical introduction, the children learnt the principles of computer science with the indi educational robot. This encourages independent problem solving in an entertaining way and supports the development of spatial and logical thinking. The children also learnt the basics of programming in a playful way using Lego robots.

Quiz with the International Office

"Quiz your way around the world with the International Office" was the title of another programme. After an introduction to the department by head Verena Seitz, the children were able to guess and estimate numerous questions from Katharina Zolotic and Elisabeth Valentina Llanos Wild and learn interesting and curious facts about the countries of the HNU partner universities. Two exchange students from South Korea were also guests here and wrote down the first names of each child in South Korean characters.

AI in medicine

In the lecture "Machine Learning in Medicine" by Daniel Hieber and Annika Wiebe from the DigiHealth Institute at HNU, the children learnt where we encounter artificial intelligence in everyday life, how algorithms work and what applications there are for them in medicine. True to the motto "theory meets practice", the children were able to test an algorithm on the PC that differentiates between apples and pears.

Games get-together in the library

Fun and games were on offer for the children in the library. While the parents were given a tour of the library by Karin O'Callaghan, the children were able to choose between various board and card games and play together with Dörte Schmidt, Karen Füller and Claudia Mann. They were also given a brief insight into the library as a place of learning for students.
