The Institute for Entrepreneurship (IfE) and the Africa Institute at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) jointly presented eight papers at the ISPIM Conference 2023. The event, which was hosted in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 4 to 7 June, was themed "Innovation and Circular Economy".

At this year's ISPIM (International Society for Professional Innovation Management) conference, around 550 participants from 40 countries gathered in the Slovenian capital to take part in more than numerous presentations, workshops and panel discussions in the field of innovation management and circular economy. Among the speakers were a total of eight HNU professors, research assistants and students who presented their research to an international audience of experts.

Broad participation of HNU researchers with diverse research topics

Researchers Verena Mattes, Vanessa Miller and Sarah Leible were already involved in the opening programme of the conference, the Junior Research Lab for young scientists. In the further course of the conference, HNU researchers contributed a variety of perspectives on innovation and sustainability with several papers.

Prof. Dr. Daniel Schallmo dedicated his paper to the linking of sustainability and digitalisation ("Comprehending Sustainability"). The contribution assesses the network of relationships between the two future topics, identifies research gaps and examines possible future trends.

A sustainability-oriented assessment framework for digital technologies (SAFT), which supports companies in selecting the appropriate digital technology, was presented by Prof. Dr. Jens Kolb. The SAFT framework evaluates digital technologies in terms of sustainability factors as well as crucial aspects such as technology potential and suitability for the company.

The paper presented by Verena Mattes provided an overview of research on entrepreneurial ecosystems. With 145 papers analysed in terms of discipline, time, geography, methodology, focus and future directions, among others, the study highlights the current state of research, key areas and the future of the field.

Sarah Leible provided an insight into the state of the art in the field of sustainable entrepreneurship. With an analysis of more than 500 publications, the paper provides an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of developments, related fields and leading authors in the field of sustainable entrepreneurship.

Vanessa Miller's presentation revolved around the circular economy and the debate on economic growth. Her paper presented the current state of research on the relationship between the circular economy and economic growth.

Tal Berman (Johannesburg Business School, South Africa) presented a joint review of research on digital start-ups with Prof. Daniel Schallmo and Chris Williams. The two academics identified three main research directions using a methodological search protocol and validated the results through expert interviews.

The contribution by Pia Reihle and Verena Alt focused on the extent to which storytelling can (positively) influence the public acceptance of digital financial business models. Structured interviews with experts from the finance and brand sector as well as a quantitative survey provided revealing insights into the status quo of digitalisation in the German financial sector and the importance of storytelling as a marketing tool.

Marlene Huber and Marie Heuermann analysed the intersection between the research areas of digital leadership and female leadership, which has hardly been studied so far. They explored the question of the extent to which Eagly & Karau's "Role Congruity Theory of Prejudice Toward Female Leaders" is still applicable to female leaders in the digital context.
