What was your main motivation to go abroad?

Since the start of my studies, I had aimed to spend a semester abroad. My motivation was ultimately based on classic reasons, such as improving my English, gaining new cultural experiences, and certainly enhancing my prospects in future job applications. However, from the beginning, I also had Lisbon in mind as a destination, which is why my fascination with this city was in some ways my main motivation.

Although this phrase may sound clichéd, meeting people from other countries and cultures greatly broadens one's own horizons!

What were your biggest concerns?

At the time I applied for the semester abroad, I actually had no reservations. Shortly thereafter, I started dating my current girlfriend, which then led to some concerns. Of course, long-distance relationships, even if temporary, are not pleasant. However, they can work, which is why, in my opinion, no one should let them be a deterrent.

Would you recommend a stay abroad? Why?

Definitely! The reasons for a semester abroad are clear. Although this phrase may sound clichéd, meeting people from other countries and cultures greatly broadens one’s own horizons! Additionally, one certainly benefits from a different educational institution and a somewhat different study culture. Moreover, it must honestly be added that the intensity of a semester abroad does not match the usual routine. Therefore, there is also the opportunity to get to know the country, culture, and people better. For instance, I don’t recall ever having spent three hours by the sea before attending a lecture.

What did you learn from your stay abroad?

Countless heartwarming memories, international friends, new perspectives on our European neighbours, experiences that I will have a lot to talk about for a very long time, a second home, and hopefully soon, a cool, old Portuguese jersey.

Fun Fact

While the general price level is noticeably lower than in Germany, it's particularly the prices for food and drinks that are significantly lower (provided one dines authentically). Therefore, it's always enjoyable to eat out.

Were your expectations met?

Fundamentally, I really tried not to set my expectations too high. In my opinion, it's beneficial to be open and to engage locally with what fascinates and appeals to you at the moment. The notion of having "the time of your life" I find unhelpful because it carries the burden of constant high expectations. Nonetheless, I can say that I was incredibly excited beforehand and am just as incredibly happy being here!

Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experience abroad?

In my group of friends here, I am actually the only German, which I find quite remarkable, especially in Lisbon. This makes the abroad experience even more international and diverse. Another unique experience was the Freedom Day celebration. 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the end of fascism. The day before, we stood arm in arm with Portuguese students and sang the national anthem, albeit somewhat pretentiously.
