What was your main motivation to go abroad?

From the beginning of my studies, it was clear to me that I definitely wanted to do a semester abroad. One of the main motivations was to explore new cultures, traditions and meet people, to gain many new experiences and to share adventures. But also, the idea of studying in another country and a new environment appealed to me. The diverse course selection at Laurea, as well as the proximity to the capital, Helsinki, were also significant advantages.

Here, many people with the same intentions come together, connecting with each other and creating great experiences.

What were your biggest concerns?

I believe everyone has concerns; for me, it was things like "Will I make friends quickly enough?" or "Did I choose the right courses?". However, everything settled in quite quickly here and the concerns were completely unfounded. This allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience.

Would you recommend a stay abroad? Why?

Absolutely! It's a unique experience, but not one you go through alone. Because on-site, you meet many other international students and also have the opportunity not only to immerse yourself in the culture of the host country but also to get close to other cultures and traditions. Here, many people with the same intentions come together, connecting with each other and creating great experiences.

Fun Fact

The Finns take their lunch break very early, usually between 11.45 AM and 1.00 PM. Morning classes last until around 11.45 AM and then everyone goes to the cafeteria for lunch. Most afternoon classes start at 12.30 PM and the cafeteria closes at 1.30 PM. Dinner tends to be served here as early as 5.00 PM.

What did you learn from your stay abroad?

Incredibly much! The many people I had the opportunity to meet, the shared experiences we had, but also the life on-site and the numerous moments that make this time unforgettable. Of course, I also had the chance to improve my English skills and learn a lot about the Finnish way of working.

Were your expectations met?

I had no specific expectations for my semester abroad, so there were no particular anticipations. I can only say that I am very excited about my semester abroad in Finland! Helsinki is a fantastic city because it combines nature and city life. The university is modern and well-equipped, the cafeteria was great 🙂 and the other students and professors are very helpful and open-minded.

Over 47 steps, you ascend to the landmark of the city - the Helsinki Cathedral.

Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experience abroad?

Be sure to be open and embrace the experience! Actively engage with others, immerse yourselves in new cultures and definitely organise "international dinner nights". I believe you seldom have the opportunity to get to know so many different cultures and such amazing people in such a short time.
