Work in the digital age: new study on psychological contracts

02.05.2024, Research :

What impact does the digitalisation of work have on the mutual expectations between employers and employees, the so-called psychological contract? HNU Professor Dr Tassilo Schuster, together with Lisa Ballas and Alexander Pflaum (both from the University of Bamberg), investigated this question. The results of the conceptual study have now been published in the European Journal of Work and Organisational Psychology.

With the publication ‘Unravelling psychological contracts in a digital age of work: a systematic literature review’, the researchers offer a comprehensive insight into current research on the psychological contract in the digital age of work (future of work). In the conceptual study, which is based on a literature review, four mechanisms of work digitalisation (remote/virtual collaboration, online communication, algorithm-based coordination and digital skills) are identified and summarised in a framework concept (ROAD framework).

The results lay the conceptual foundation for future research on psychological contracts in the digital age of work by shedding light on the dynamic impact of work digitalisation on different phases of psychological contracts.
