A group of students and professors from the Information Management Automotive program at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) took second place in their classification in the ADAC 24h ecompetition on the weekend of October 28-30, 2022.

The ADAC 24h e-competition is an endurance competition at the Hockenheimring for cars with all-electric drive over 24 hours. The aim is to complete the longest distance within the competition time. Particular attention is paid to driving with optimized fuel consumption. The charging conditions are the same for all teams in this competition: each car can be charged with a maximum of 22 kilowatt hours. The scoring takes place within five classes, which are divided according to the net battery capacity of the vehicles.

Before the race, the team led by HNU professors Dr. Manfred Plechaty, Dr. Jörg-Oliver Vogt and Prof. Dr. Martin Stirzel precisely evaluated their Fiat 500e in terms of data and driver technology in order to be able to make good use of advantages such as weight and low consumption in the competition.

During the race, the biggest challenge for the team was to maintain focus on driving steadily in the most efficient range of the vehicle at any given time during the night runs. Through a combination of teamwork, competence in theory and practice, and perseverance, the HNU team achieved an excellent ranking among professional teams from all over Europe.

The professors already have experience with e-car racing: Professors Harald Gerlach, Manfred Plechaty and Jörg-Oliver Vogt took first place in their class at the "Schauinsland Hill Challenge" as part of the ECO Grand Prix 2020 (opens in a new window). But newcomers also have a good chance of success, as demonstrated by the students at the ADAC 24h ecompetition, who took part in a comparable competition for the first time.
