04.04.2024, Study :

Developing new ideas and refining tried-and-tested methods: the Teaching Day at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) was all about exchanging ideas on innovative teaching concepts, activating teaching methods and involving students. The process for developing the new teaching mission statement was also presented and the prizes for digital teaching and innovative teaching provided by the HNU Sponsors' Association were awarded. The event, organized by the Center for Digital Teaching (ZDL), was moderated by Dana Hoffmann, who also moderates the Science Slam in Ulm.

Live talks, interactive sessions and open labs

After the welcome by Vice President Prof. Dr. Julia Kormann, the live talk "Perspectives in Focus" with Prof. Dr. Axel Focke, Tobias Ademmer from the Center for Digital Teaching, research assistant Carina Volk-Schor and Nadja Hagnauer from the student representatives was on the agenda. Here, topics from teaching and lectures were examined from different perspectives.
Another live talk with Prof. Dr. Julia Kormann, the Dean Prof. Dr. Sylvia Schafmeister and the Deans Prof. Dr. Achim Dehnert and Prof. Dr. Niklas Homfeldt focused on the topic of the teaching mission statement.

Visitors then had the opportunity to discuss one of four focus topics in small groups in a closed session. Inspiring brainstorming sessions and discussions were held on the topics of "AI in teaching", "Practice transfer", "Action learning" and "(Digital) testing". The results were subsequently presented to the entire audience. In addition, all labs and the HNU library were open.

Award for digital teaching and award for innovative teaching

Since the challenges of the corona pandemic, the HNU Sponsors' Association has been awarding the prize for digital teaching. The aim is to find innovative teaching and learning concepts that focus on the student learning process, whether analog, digital or hybrid. This year, the award ceremony was relaunched: the prize for digital teaching was awarded for the last time and the prize for innovative teaching was awarded for the first time. Both prizes were awarded with 1000 euros each.

The prize for digital teaching went to Prof. Dr. Claudia Kocian-Dirr for her concept "The basis of the future: AI and teaching hand in hand", which systematically integrates the use of AI tools in each of her lectures in three Bachelor's degree courses at the Faculty of Information Management.

The prize for innovative teaching was awarded to Prof. Dr. Johannes Basch for his concept "Metacompetencies: Communication, Conversation and Conflict Management". The concept is used in courses on the Bachelor's degree in Business Psychology and focuses on teaching practice-oriented meta-skills.

The proposed concepts were assessed by a jury consisting of members of the Sponsors' Association, the Vice President for Studies and Teaching, Prof. Dr. Julia Kormann, and the Head of the Center for Digital Teaching, Tobias Ademmer, and evaluated in terms of degree of innovation, participation and diversity of activating methods as well as coordination of teaching and examination methodology.
