About ISPIM

ISPIM, the International Society for Professional Innovation Management, unites members from research, industry, consulting and the public sector who all share a passion for innovation management. It is driven by the question of how to successfully create new products, processes and services from ideas to promote economic growth and well-being. ISPIM was founded in Norway in 1983 and is the oldest, largest and most active international innovation network.

Researchers from IfE presented five papers at this year’s ISPIM conference in Copenhagen.

Tal Berman presented the paper "Business Model Transformation: The Case of Israeli PropTech and ConTech", which he co-authored with Daniel Schallmo and Christopher A. Williams.

Background to the paper:

Business Model Transformation: The Case of Israeli PropTech and ConTech

The goal of this paper is the introduction to the digital transformation of business models as it occurs in the Israeli real estate and construction technologies landscape. To achieve it, we have observed that landscape by using digital data and conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs and experts in the field. Although the real estate and construction industry has faced many challenges, such as the ability to recruit talented workers and diminishing bottom lines, it has been slow in implementing state-of-the-art digital technologies for dealing with these. Therefore, in this paper, we bring forward the technologies and especially the digital start-ups that shape that industry and solve its challenges while fundamentally transforming its traditional business models. Moreover, we contribute further to the digital transformation literature by showing, for example, how digital start-ups bridge the technological acceptance gap of workers in the industry.

Sophie Steinecke presented the paper "Digital Entrepreneurship in the Healthcare Sector in Germany and Israel", which she wrote with Madeleine Taglinger, Jens Pätzmann and Daniel Schallmo.

Background to the paper:

Digital Entrepreneurship in the Healthcare Sector in Germany and Israel

This research aims to investigate whether Germany and its Silver Agers are ready for technological start-ups in the healthcare sector. Seven structured interviews were conducted with experts of the German healthcare sector, and quantitative research was performed with German Silver Agers. Our primary findings show that the necessary framework conditions for a telemedical start-up in Germany are not guaranteed due to slow progress in terms of digitisation, a lack of information technology standards, and insufficient investment in care structures. Moreover, the traditional attitude of German Silver Agers represents a further hurdle. Although they are generally positive about telemedicine technologies, German Silver Agers prefer to visit a physician in person. Therefore, this study offers a source for largescale and individual projects as well as start-up companies seeking to enter the German health sector market.

Christopher A. Williams presented the paper "Digital Maturity Model for Proptech: A applied case study approach", which he wrote with Tal Berman and Daniel Schallmo.

Background to the paper:

Digital Maturity Model for Proptech: A applied case study approach

Has the real estate industry finally embraced digital transformation as we witness with their PropTech movement? Due to the industry inherited inflexibility and overall lack of innovation management research, there are still some considerable questions that are being raised. Based on our previous work, the goal of this paper is to apply our Interaction-based Digital Maturity Model for SMEs to explore one high and one low mature real estate SMEs. We identified distinct factors that makes these SMEs more and less digitally mature within the framework of our model using an applied multi-case study approach. The result of this paper provides better academic and practitioner-oriented insights on how PropTech SMEs can make the essential steps to digital transformation.

Antonia Hanesch presented her paper “Clarifying Digital Entrepreneurship: A Systematic Literature Review and Bibliometric Analysis “, which she wrote with Daniel Schallmo.

Background to the paper:

Clarifying Digital Entrepreneurship: A Systematic Literature Review and Bibliometric Analysis

This paper provides a structured literature review offering insights on digital entrepreneurship. The research goal was to clarify the understanding of digital entrepreneurship. Seventy-five research articles were investigated with respect to e.g. discipline, time, geography, methodology, and focus, using bibliometric analysis. Three research fronts were identified. The first addresses the understanding and conceptualization of digital entrepreneurship, the second deals with the digital entrepreneurship ecosystem, and the last includes research about the survival of digital entrepreneur ventures. This study generates insights on the current state of research, key areas and the future of the field. Therefore, this study lays the groundwork for further development of the field and dialogues with practitioners and researchers of other disciplines.

Marie Heuermann presented the paper “Crisis Effects on Digital Businesses: A Systematic Literature Review”, which she co-authored with Maxwell Iwuamadi, Dipanjan Kundu, Victor Matthew, Daniel Schallmo and Birgit Stelzer.

Background to the paper:

The coronavirus crisis has disrupted the business models of many companies. Following its global spread and the attention given to e-commerce, it became a priority to study the effect of crisis on digital business. This study was a structured systematic literature review of 41 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2019 and 2021 addressing thematic issues around the topic. It evaluated the research area, countries, journals, main authors based on co-authorship, data-collection methods, and content in each paper. The review extracted and discussed six pain points: health problems, panic, government regulations, perceived risk, ease of use, and cost saving. The aim of this study is to give researchers insight into the effect of crisis on digital businesses with the impact of COVID-19 on online grocery shopping as a case study. It further aims to identify gaps and give recommendations for future research.
