07.12.2021, Research :

The Institute for Entrepreneurship and the Institute for Digital Transformation presented four papers at this year's ISPIM conference in Valencia from 29 November to 1 December 2021. After a break of almost two years, the ISPIM conference took place again this year in Valencia.

More than 200 participants from 25 countries met in Valencia from 29.11.2021 to 01.12.2021. In over 120 presentations, topics related to innovation and digitalisation were presented and discussed.

On Tuesday, Katharina Ehmig-Klassen presented the paper "Digital Leadership: Approaches and Practical Insights from the B2B-Sector", which she wrote with Daniel Schallmo.

Background to the paper:

Digital Leadership: Approaches and Practical Insights from the B2B-Sector

Digitalization has put forward a new leadership approach known as "digital leadership". This leadership approach has gained strong influence in the context of current changes in the world. The B2B sector is also affected by these current developments and the associated impact on digital leadership style. This sector also has to find new approaches to digital leadership. The aim of this article is to identify theoretical and practical concepts in a literature review. These should provide an overview of existing applications. Based on this, we conducted semi-structured interviews. From this, the transformation to digital leadership in the B2B sector and the associated success factors and challenges are highlighted. In a comparison between practice and theory in conjunction with findings from the interviews; success factors, gaps and potential for improvement are identified and interpreted, and appropriate recommendations are derived.

On Tuesday, Daniel Hasler presented the paper "Bibliometric Analysis of Digital Platforms: Current State and Future Research", which he also wrote with Daniel Schallmo.
Background to the paper:

Bibliometric Analysis of Digital Platforms: Current State and Future Research”

Seven of the ten most valuable companies in the world operate under a digital platform business model. Consequently, the amount of scientific literature in recent years is rising. This paper intends to present an overview of the current research on digital platforms. We identified the major research streams and clustered them with a co-citation network analysis. Our work shows the main fields of interest in digital platforms, and overlaps of the research areas and fields that are still under-represented. For example, academic literature has mainly focused on B2C (Business-to-Consumer) platforms, with research on B2B (Business-to-Business) platforms being sparse. Furthermore, academic literature has yet to develop guidelines and procedures for establishing digital platforms in general and to improve knowledge transfer to practitioners. This paper contributes to research on digital platforms by presenting the current state of platform research and highlighting areas for future research.

Tal Berman also presented the paper "Business Model Transformation through Artificial Intelligence in the Israeli InsurTech" on Tuesday, which he also wrote with Daniel Schallmo.
Background to the paper:

Business Model Transformation through Artificial Intelligence in the Israeli InsurTech

This paper aims to introduce the case for digital transformation of business models (DTBM) via artificial intelligence (AI) as it takes place in the Israeli InsurTech. For this purpose, we have mapped that landscape using archival data and conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with experts in the field. External (e.g. Change in the customers' preferences) and internal challenges (e.g. low IT capabilities) have highlighted the need for DTBM with AI technology playing an important role as a driver for such. In this paper, we introduce these challenges and the value-creation opportunities AI entails within the industry. We also present how Israeli InsurTech start-ups shape the industry, solve challenges, and create value. In this way, we help bridge many gaps, e.g. how AI is used for value creation, how Data-Driven-Business-Models rely on big-data analytics as key activity for value creation, and how DTBM innovation generally works in practice.

On Wednesday, Prof. Dr. Daniel Schallmo presented the paper "Holistic Digitalization: Strategy, Transformation, and Implementation", which he wrote together with Christopher Williams.
Background to the paper:

Holistic Digitalization: Strategy, Transformation, and Implementation

In the new global digital economy, a holistic view of digitalization has become central for all non-profit and for-profit institutions. Recent developments in digital initiatives have heightened the need to investigate holistic digitalization. This paper aims to develop a holistic view to digitalization consisting of several fundamental levels for strategically oriented digitalization. These include digital strategy, digital transformation of business models, and digital implementation. Each level consists of an approach including a procedure model and main content. Combined with our previous work, we applied semi-structured interviews to develop an initial, grounded theory for a holistic view to digitalization. The paper offers a relevant concept and outlines an appropriate research methodology to advance this research field. This closes an existing research gap regarding the holistic view to digitalization.
