HNU Management Forum: Insightful lecture by LMU Professor Dr. Albrecht Schmidt on artificial intelligence

18.03.2024, Press Release :

"AI as the new everyday companion - what do we delegate and what do we still want to think and do ourselves?" - was the title of the Management Forum at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) on March 12. In the packed lecture hall, AI expert Prof. Dr. Albrecht Schmidt gave an interactive insight into how AI works, highlighted potentials and risks and ventured a look into the future.

Prof. Dr. Albrecht Schmidt is a computer scientist and holds the Chair of Human-Centered Ubiquitous Media at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich. In his work, he deals intensively with questions of human-computer interaction, ubiquitous computer systems and media technology.

The start of his presentation at the HNU Management Forum - a prompt on image generation by a professor who lectures on AI at the HNU - actively involved the AI-interested audience. Prof. Dr. Albrecht Schmidt presented his lecture with many examples of language models such as ChatGPT and image generation tools such as Midjourney. He highlighted their potential, but also pointed out their limitations. For example, he pointed out that ChatGPT is only supportive if you can basically write the text yourself, otherwise there are risks involved. The topics of security and authenticity were also discussed, with a particular focus on the question of how regulation should be designed in relation to AI. He also explained why ratings in the area of online shopping will lose authenticity through the use of AI, among other things.

In a concluding look into the future, Prof. Dr. Albrecht Schmidt emphasized that generative AI and language models will ensure a fundamental transformation of our knowledge and information culture. "We are moving away from search engines and towards technologies that provide answers. It is fundamental that we remain in control ourselves."

HNU President Prof. Dr. Uta M. Feser was delighted with the great interest in this event: "Prof. Dr. Schmidt's exciting lecture once again made it clear that artificial intelligence is here to stay. The use of this technology is changing science, business and society in the long term. We at HNU have also expanded our expertise with the help of Hightech Agenda Bayern in order to prepare students for the challenges of the future and support companies in this transformation process."

After the lecture, the audience had the opportunity to enter into direct dialog with Prof. Dr. Albrecht Schmidt and ask questions. This much-used opportunity led to lively and inspiring discussions.
