HNU Innovation Space celebrates 5 years of inspiration and creativity

09.12.2024, University News:

Creative ideas and innovations take centre stage here: the Innovation Space at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) is an inspiring place where students can come together with professors and companies in a creative environment to master the challenges of the digital world. At the end of November, Prof. Patricia Franzreb and Prof. Danny Franzreb, the initiators of the space, celebrated its fifth anniversary with numerous guests and a varied programme.

Over the past five years, students have attended inspiring lectures and workshops in the Innovation Space and realised creative practical projects with renowned companies such as Nivea and Gardena. In the creative spaces, they use design thinking, user experience design and lean management methods to develop innovative solutions for digital transformation. They also put ideas into practice with rapid prototyping and modelling as well as virtual and augmented reality applications.

The Innovation Space also hosts regular events beyond the degree programme, such as the Design Talk, an event format where students, companies, creative agencies and other interested parties can gain insights into the fields of design, science and business.

Programme on the anniversary day: workshops, guided tour and Design Talk Vol. 11

To mark the anniversary, the Innovation Space team put together a varied programme for different target groups: Pupils were invited to a design thinking workshop, anyone interested had the opportunity to get to know the Innovation Space in detail during a guided tour, and students and alumni could take part in a hand lettering workshop. The Design Talk Vol. 11 took place in the evening.

Design Thinking Workshop

The anniversary day began with a design thinking workshop for pupils from Lessing Gymnasium Neu-Ulm. Their task was to develop an innovative purse in a short space of time, create a prototype and present it to their fellow pupils and Carina Volk-Schor and Johanna Schäfers from Innovation Space in an elevator pitch. This resulted in ideas such as a wallet with a password entry or localisation function.

Chalklettering Workshop

In the subsequent hand lettering workshop with Catherine Trautmann, known as "Cathy von Ulm", HNU students created creative Christmas and New Year motifs on chalkboards.

Design Talk Vol. 11

In the evening, Cathy von Ulm and Dr Nancy Hecker-Denschlag, Chair of the Albert Einstein Discovery Center, spoke at the HNU Design Talk, which took place for the eleventh time this year. Prof Dr Julia Kormann, Vice President of HNU, opened the Design Talks Vol. 11 with a speech on the origin and development of the importance of innovation. Her words were aimed in particular at the HNU students, whom she motivated to continue developing their own ideas.

Cathy von Ulm shared excerpts from her diverse work and her personal story. She encouraged the guests to take the plunge into self-employment and then surprised them with a practical exercise in which the participants were able to pick up pen and paper themselves. Dr Nancy Hecker-Denschlag introduced the audience to the planned Albert Einstein Discovery Center and gave them food for thought in a humorous way.

The musical finale of the evening was provided by the "Invited Duo", which created a pleasant atmosphere. The atmospheric finale offered the students the opportunity to gain further insights into her work in personal discussions with Dr Nancy Hecker-Denschlag.
