23.05.2024, Research :

Premiere at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU): On 17 May, the first doctoral students to complete their doctorates in the doctoral programme ‘Digital Innovations for a Changing Society’ (DIWAG) officially began their work. As part of the doctoral programme, HNU, in cooperation with OTH Amberg-Weiden and Landshut University of Applied Sciences, is offering its young researchers the opportunity to complete a doctorate directly at a university for the first time. Four doctoral students form the vanguard; further doctoral students will follow in the coming months.

Previously, doctorates at the university were only permitted in the form of co-operative dissertation projects; since the award of the right to award doctorates last year, independent doctoral procedures are now also possible in the DIWAG joint college of the participating universities. DIWAG is dedicated to research into digital systems that support the management of social change. The broad diversity of disciplines that the three partner universities bring to the college creates a breeding ground for interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperative research.

Exchange and qualification platform: DIWAG offers ideal conditions for doctoral studies

Four doctoral students - all academic staff from the participating universities - have successfully completed the first selection process for DIWAG and will be able to research their topics together in the research training group over the next few years. The first and second supervision will be carried out in tandems from two universities each. From the winter semester 24/25, a qualification programme specially developed for the doctoral students will support them in training and deepening their academic skills both at a general and subject-specific level. The doctoral students will also be specifically involved in teaching so that they can gain teaching experience for their future academic career at an early stage.

Interdisciplinary collaboration creates a breeding ground for digital innovations

The doctoral programme focuses on interdisciplinarity: DIWAG brings together health sciences, engineering and social sciences as well as business informatics and computer engineering for joint research into digital innovations. Currently, doctoral projects with a focus on economics are mainly represented; in the next round of admissions, topics from the health sector will be added.
It is possible to join the doctoral programme at any time. By the end of this year, 10 to 15 doctoral students are expected to complete their doctorates under the DIWAG umbrella.
