The programme of the bridge course included a short theoretical input, the development of their own apps with the MIT AppInventor and the control of Lego Mindstorms robots. At the end of the three-day course, the students presented their results.
The first-year students received support from dedicated tutors from higher semesters. In addition to tips on programming, they also gave helpful advice on the general start of their studies. The bridge course was led by Prof. Dr. Erica Weilemann. She was supported by research assistant Alina Geßler.
Hands-on programming inspires the first-year students
The aim of the bridge course, which takes place regularly before lectures begin, is to get students excited about programming before they start their studies and to make it easier for them to get started. "Especially the work with the Lego Mindstorms robots and the combination of hardware and software went down well with the students," summed up Prof. Dr. Erica Weilemann.
The students' feedback confirms this observation: "I enjoyed programming the Lego Mindstorms robots because you could always find out new things by experimenting. And the sense of achievement that you managed to complete the task was super!" was one of the conclusions drawn by the participants during the final evaluation.
