In his photographic works, Prof. Danny Franzreb documents the visual aesthetics of anthropogenic systems and their effects on modern society. At this year's photoSchweiz, the largest exhibition of photographic works in Switzerland, he showed works from his series Benidorm.
Benidorm is a series about a city that embodies hyperurbanism like no other. Until the 1960s, Benidorm was a small fishing village. Today, the city has reached the highest density of high-rise buildings per capita in the world. Author and Guardian journalist Giles Tremlett considers Benidorm the birthplace of package tourism, which is also the main reason for the city's explosive growth.
The unique character of Benidorm and its people changes greatly throughout the year. At the beginning of summer, the city serves as a vacation spot for Spanish families. Beginning in September, Benidorm is visited primarily by tourists from the United Kingdom and Ireland, to the point where the beach is barely recognizable. In a time marked by Covid-19, the resulting photographs have once again taken on a different significance and almost surreal feel.

Danny Franzreb is a photographer and professor of design at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences. In his photographic works, he documents the visual aesthetics of anthropogenic systems and their impact on modern society. He was awarded the Emerging Photography Award in 2019, has won the International Photography Award in Gold several times and creative awards such as the Red Dot, iF or the DDC Award. His work has been shown in group exhibitions at BBA Gallery Berlin and Aperture Gallery New York, among others.
