From counselling practice: Case study training for an assessment centre

09.07.2021, Study :

Around 90 students worked on a case study as one of the typical tasks of an assessment centre in cooperation with the management consultancy OSCAR GmbH. For the virtual format, Prof. Dr. Michael Gutiérrez used the two platforms Zoom and Moodle in an integrated concept.

An assessment centre is often used to select suitable future employees during the application process. Applicants often have to work on a case study under time pressure and present proposed solutions. The workshop, which Professor Dr. Michael Gutiérrez conducted in virtual format in cooperation with the management consultancy OSCAR, prepares participants for these and other challenges.

Ready for everyday consulting?

Around 90 students were able to find out by working on a case study from OSCAR GmbH in the field of logistics and process optimisation. They slipped into the role of consultants and worked on their PowerPoint presentations in the breakout rooms in Zoom. Among other things, they had to be quick on the uptake, think analytically and work well in a team. Afterwards, individual groups presented their proposed solutions in the main Zoom room. The OSCAR staff took on the role of a customer who put the solution proposed by each group through its paces by asking specific questions - a real challenge!

What should I keep in mind during the interview?

The interview is another typical hurdle of an assessment centre. How can I prepare for it and which aspects play an important role in the interview? The OSCAR representatives also gave the students valuable tips on this.

And how do my fellow students assess my performance?

After the workshop, the students evaluated each other's solutions to the case study via Moodle. "Assessing the results of other students' work requires a change of perspective and enables deeper reflection," said Gutiérrez.

"The cooperation with OSCAR enables a practice-oriented enrichment of the teaching for the students," Gutiérrez reported happily. Jana Kastner and Betül Sahin from OSCAR's human resources department were equally pleased with the concept of the cooperation event.
