AI Insights: Master's students visit companies in Basel and Freiburg

10.01.2024, Study :

Digital innovations and AI were the focus of an excursion by Master's students from Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) to Basel and Freiburg in December. Under the guidance of HNU Professor Dr. Andy Weeger, the participants visited two companies in the pharmaceutical and biotech sector and gained practical insights into emerging technologies as a valuable addition to their study program.

Two companies, Roche (Basel) and Endress+Hauser Biotech (Freiburg), opened their doors to 18 students from the Strategic Information Management (SIM), Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) and Digital Innovation Management (DIM) degree programs.

The first day of the excursion in Basel was dedicated to the topic of AI in the pharmaceutical sector: the students gained insights into AI and machine learning in drug development (Dr. Stefan Fraessle), 3D printing and virtual factories (Piotr Motyka) and generative AI in therapeutics (Dr. Josh Payne). A meet & greet and a company tour rounded off the visit.

The following day in Freiburg was no less informative for the participants: Endress+Hauser employees gave first-hand reports on their work in the fields of innovation ecosystems and digitally supported molecular biological process monitoring (Dr. Nicholas Krohn) and IoT in the biotech industry (Vivart Kapoor). Here, too, the HNU Group was given an exclusive tour of the plant.

The students found the excursion to be a valuable addition to their Master's degree course: they were able to benefit from informative practical insights and challenging discussions and take away new input on the use and management of AI and digital platforms in the pharma and biotech industry.
