The "Systems Engineering (B. Eng.)" degree program in the "Digital and Regional" project is starting again at the beginning of the 2023/2024 winter semester with a pleasing number of applicants. On Friday, September 29, the first-semester students were welcomed by representatives from politics and business as well as the university community at the new university center in Leipheim. A total of 35 students enrolled in the program. At the same time, seven bachelor graduates were bid farewell during the event.

Since 2016, the Systems Engineering degree program has been offered at the university centers in Nördlingen and Memmingen as a cooperative project of Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with Augsburg University of Applied Sciences and Kempten University of Applied Sciences. Starting this winter semester, students can now also start their studies directly in Leipheim and learn here close to home or business and work on projects together. For this purpose, the person responsible for the HNU location, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Grinninger, together with his team and the organizers of the "Areal Digital" start-up center, created an innovative learning and study environment on 400 m2.

The Vice President for Studies and Teaching at Neu-Ulm University, Prof. Dr. Julia Kormann, emphasized in her welcoming remarks: "Education is the interaction between teachers and learners to develop solutions for the future."

District Administrator Dr. Hans Reichhart addressed his greetings to the new students and graduates. He honored the excellent partnership between Neu-Ulm University and the "Areal Digital" start-up center at the Leipheim site and announced further developments in the area surrounding the center.

In the meantime, more than 100 regional companies from business and industry are cooperating with the three universities in the Bavarian-Swabian region in the "Digital and Regional" project.

Florian Daniel from Roland Berger GmbH provided the guests with profound insights into the current development of automotive suppliers. He spoke of strong changes in the automotive market and the supplier industry. "The industry therefore needs enthusiastic and open-minded young professionals who see a dynamic and challenging environment as exciting tasks," Daniel said.

The head of the program, Kirchmeier, explained the advantages: "Enabling students to develop and manage complex and networked Industrie 4.0 systems is at the forefront of the program. This is not exclusively about technical competence, but also about personal development. The aim is to work and communicate with each other in small agile project teams. By combining practical work in the company and project-based learning at the university centers, the degree program prepares students for a complex and rapidly changing working world."

Flexible study model in full-time and part-time mode

The flexible study program allows students to individually organize their learning workload and can be studied full-time, but also in the tried-and-tested part-time model with students being employed by a company. It is possible to adapt the study model in each semester according to personal needs. With this approach, the study program management responds to the increased demand of our society for higher educational flexibility.

Regional study model: face-to-face or digital

What is special about this study program is that students who are in the middle of their working lives or who are simultaneously completing a Chamber of Industry and Commerce apprenticeship can earn a university degree; however, it is also possible to study with practical phases. On three days a week, the students work in their company, and on two days they attend courses so far at the Nördlingen or Memmingen locations. Since June 2023, another regional study location has been added by the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences in the "Areal Digital" startup center in Leipheim.

For the first time, students can also attend the degree program directly at the THA in Augsburg and use rooms and laboratories at the Faculty of Computer Science.

The study model is supported by modern and didactically high-quality e-learning offerings such as learning platforms and video conferencing. Through a messenger service, students are in permanent exchange with their lecturers. This guarantees structured and supervised preparation and follow-up of studies.

"We thus offer not only working people prospects for further qualification, but also high school graduates, master craftsmen and technicians a particularly practice-oriented combined study program in their home country," explains Kirchmeier, head of the study program. The modern teaching methods ensure that the students can individually design their studies and learning units and freely divide their time. This is an ideal way to combine work, study and free time.

Information evening on the study program
