Quo vadis, re­search? "Re­search Day" at HNU

This year, the "Research Day" at Neu-Ulm University (HNU) took place on July 07: In the afternoon, HNU researchers and interested parties met on campus to exchange information about the research activities at the university. In addition to presenting the main research areas and current funding opportunities, HNU research professors presented their current projects. Furthermore, the future of doctoral studies at HNU was a topic.

After an insight into current activities and instruments of funding consulting, the focus was on HNU's main research areas: "Intelligent Mobility and Logistics" and "Digitization of Healthcare" as well as the research-strong community in the area of business models and entrepreneurship. It is in the intersection of these central fields that HNU's research-strong community is formed: digital innovations for a changing society.

Afterwards, the research professorships at HNU presented their current projects. Prof. Dr. Philipp Brune (opens in a new window)(Faculty of Information Management) presented relevant aspects from the field of AI that are currently being researched at the TTZ Günzburg. An overview of the current research projects at CROSS (Center for Research on Service Science) was given by Prof. Dr. Heiko Gewald (opens in a new window) and Prof. Dr. Heinz-Theo Wagner (opens in a new window) (Faculty of Information Management), who are currently conducting research in the areas of digital innovations and grand challenges, among others. Prof. Dr. Alexander Kracklauer (opens in a new window) (Faculty of Business and Economics) reported from the Competence Center for Growth and Sales Strategies; here, among other things, an AI-supported negotiation training is being developed. Prof. Dr. Johannes Schobel (opens in a new window) (Faculty of Health Management) provided information about his research in the area of health tracking, among other things, and Prof. Dr. Walter Swoboda (opens in a new window) (Faculty of Health Management) explained his activities in the context of the GEHba and the Care Regio project.

Aimed from 2023: own doctorate right for the HNU

The last item on the program was dedicated to the future of doctorates at HAWs in Bavaria. In the area of BayWISS-Verbundkollegs, Priv.-Doz. Dr. Elmar Buchner about an extension until 2027 after the current transition year; HNU President Prof. Dr. Uta M. Feser is a new member of the BayWISS Steering Council. In addition, future doctoral students will have the opportunity to pursue an independent doctorate at HNU: The new Higher Education Innovation Act (HIG) will allow HAWs to have their own doctoral degree rights in individual, high-research areas (FSB) in the near future. HNU is aiming for this by probably mid-2023 in an FSB "Digital Innovations for the Changing Society" in cooperation with partner universities.
