Virtual kick-off: STAIRE project to strengthen renewable energies in the fisheries sector

16.07.2020, Transfer :

The STAIRE project (Strengthening Aquaculture Industry through Renewable Energy) is intended to strengthen the fishing industry in Senegal through the integration of renewable energy. Due to current restrictions, the kick-off meeting took place in a special way: Not all the partners were on site, but some were virtually connected.

The project STAIRE (Strengthening Aquaculture Industry through Renewable Energy), which is led by the Africa Institute of the HNU, started in July 2020. The aim of this project is to strengthen the fishing industry in Senegal through the integration of renewable energies. Fisheries play an important role in Senegal's economy and food supply. However, because affordable energy is not available, there is often a lack of adequate cooling and transport facilities. Together with partners from industry, an interdisciplinary certificate course is being developed at the Université Gaston Berger. The students learn how renewable energies can be used in the fisheries sector.

In addition to the Université Gaston-Berger in Saint-Louis (Senegal) and the energy consulting company SL Green Energy from Dakar (Senegal), project partners include KTI-Plersch from Balzheim and Energiekonzepte Schiffer from Paderborn. Due to the international constellation and the current restrictions imposed by the Covid 19 pandemic, the obligatory kick-off event had to be transferred to a hybrid format. Thus the German project partners met personally in Paderborn in mid-July 2020 and the Senegalese partners joined in virtually via Zoom. Although this unusual format required a lot of improvisation, the kick-off could also be done virtually.
